Can you control grub worms and larvae of crane flies with Frassor insect fertilizer?

We are often asked if our lawn fertilizer, based on insect manure, fights grubs and larvae of crane flies. Let’s state up front that our products are not and certainly are not pesticides! However, the question is interesting! We do indeed see signs in practice that our fertilizers have an indirect effect on harmful grass insects such as grubs and leatherjackets. But also on harmful fungi and nematodes. How does this work exactly? In this blog we will answer the question; “Can you control grubs and leatherjackets with Frassor insect fertilizer?”.

Practical experience with Frassor insect fertilizer

This is how we came into contact with De Grasadviseur, Joost van der Pligt. The grass consultant has a lot of experience with Frassor insect fertilizer and uses it for soil improvement. The high organic matter content, combined with chitin, makes Frassor an excellent soil improver. In addition, Frassor increases plant and soil resistance.

The Grass Advisor uses Frassor insect fertilizer in case of damage by leatherjackets

” Frassor gets positive soil life going. Especially when a lot of new soil has been applied in a new garden, it is important to activate beneficial soil life. As a turf consultant, I am often called in when there are problems. Nuisance from harmful grass insects such as leatherjackets is becoming more and more common. Chemical control is no longer permitted. Where grubs eat roots or leatherjackets eat away the green parts, grass can be weakened quickly. ”

Then when birds take advantage of the larvae, they can destroy an entire lawn or golf course greens in one day. I see the damage and nuisance in leatherjackets visibly reduced after fertilizing with Frassor insect fertilizer.”

The effect of Frassor on grubs worms and leatherjackets in your lawn

We are currently conducting several tests to understand the actual effects. Frassor lawn fertilizer is different from all other lawn fertilizers. Because it is produced from insect frass. This makes Frassor the only lawn fertilizer rich in chitin.

Chitin bait for good fungi and bacteria

In studies, there is much to be found about the relationship between Chitin and the reduction of harmful nematodes and fungi. More about its effect has been studied by the Louis bolk institute. Hereby the study ‘ soil wide Interreg‘ includes background information on the main groups of soil organisms. We also see the subject of chitin in studies by Gerard Korthals at Wageningen University & Research (WUR). Various harmful fungi, but also eggs of nematodes, contain chitin. Chitin is a substance that positive soil bacteria and fungi as mychoriza stimulates.

Eggs of grubs and Leatherjackets consist of chitin!

By fertilizing with the chitin-rich Frassor, you attract the good bacteria and fungi. As soon as they have used up the chitin in the fertilizer, they will start to feed on the harmful fungi and eggs that consist of chitin. The eggs of grubs and black mites consist of chitin, which could explain the positive effect of Frassor lawn fertilizer.

With Frassor, chitin is introduced into the soil with each donation, increasing the number of good bacteria and fungi. This makes grass more resistant to diseases and pests. We can therefore say that Frassor prevents and restores.
